Katō Ichirō’s ceramics are inspired by textiles, traditional lacquerware and the natural world. To make this platter, Katō created the form, and before it hardened, impressed the surface with a woven cloth to impart its texture. After an initial firing, he painted a pattern of delicately undulating lines over its surface, and then returned it to the kiln for a second firing.
