Based in Washington state, Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen has been highly respected for her craftsmanship and teaching glassmaking for many years. With her passion for bird-watching and gardening, the artist often finds inspiration in nature and strives to capture the majesty of birds and beauty of flowers in hot-sculpted glass. She is renowned as a colorist, painstakingly articulating a bird’s plumage and emulating flower petals using glass powders. In falconry, a hood has a calming effect so the falcon won’t be startled by light, sound, or movement during training and hunting. With Rock Poppy Falcon, the artist captures a tranquil moment of a hooded falcon perched on a falconer’s gloved arm strewn with red poppies. Willenbrink-Johnsen was a contestant on Season 4 of the reality glassblowing competition series, Blown Away, where you can watch the artist creating new work in the hot shop.
