Tickets purchased from wagons on the lot would eventually be turned back into ticket takers as the audience made their way into the circus tents . These ticket boxes are still filled with torn tickets from July 16, 1956 - the final day that Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus performed under the canvas tent. The following day the show packed up and returned to its Sarasota Winter Quarters where equipment like these boxes was stored away, unnecessary for the following season's performances in arenas. That final 1956 show in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is noted as one of the most important events in the history of the American circus, followed most recently by the closing of the Ringling show in May of 2017.
