William Dutton, born in 1843, was a famous equestrian, first debuting in 1860. Over the next forty-five years he performed with the greatest circuses in America including Yankee Robinson’s, P.T. Barnum’s, and W.W. Cole’s. His act included magnificent tricks like somersaulting on a bareback horse and vaulting over the backs of twelve horses! Dutton was advertised as one of the most dashing equestrians of the age and his riding was described as elegant and graceful. He was assaulted while traveling with the John Robinson circus in 1906 and suffered from a fractured skull. He died a few months later, having never recovered from his attack.
