Popular in his time as a clown, Billy Burke is better recognized today as the father of actress Billie Burke, Glenda the Good Witch in the Wizard of Oz. Born in Waterford, Ohio in 1845, Burke began his career while in the Army, performing comical songs and joking about the life of a Civil War soldier. After the war, Burke spent almost thirty years touring with various circuses including Adam Forepaugh’s, Barnum, Bailey & Hutchinson, and the Sells Brothers’ Shows. When he passed away in 1906, he was hailed as one of the greatest vocal jesters of the tented world.
