The geography, weather, and population demographics gave rise to the traveling circus in America. In the heyday of the railroad circus, Circus Day commenced near dawn, the moment the steam locomotive's whistle signaled that the show had arrived in town. One or more trains of specially designed and decorated cars transported the exotic world from afar into the local community. Once in place, the ritual of unloading began, with people, horses, elephants, and wagons exiting the cars in a closely choreographed effort. The scale of the operation and pageant-like passage from the rail yard to the circus lot became a treasured memory.
