When the Great London Circus used electricity for lighting in 1879, most Americans were unfamiliar with this new form of technology. Rather than promoting an act, the poster advertised the brilliant illumination of the modern steam-powered generator. A calliope built onto the boiler that powered the generator added circus to the new convenience.
