The broadside, a single-sided printed sheet, with its combination of image and text, was the precursor of the colorful lithographic poster. Bold lettering in a variety of typefaces, illustrations and elaborate decorative borders were employed to reinforce key promotional phrases such as menagerie, automatodeon, and rhinoceros to draw in the crowds.
