When Richard Marquis first went to Venice to work in the famous Venini glass factory on the island of Murano, he experienced a color epiphany. There he learned to master the challenging Venetian glass-working technique of making murrine, whereby cross-sections of glass canes are joined together to create distinctive patterns on the surface of vessels. Marquis is known for his experiments with color and adapting traditional techniques in works that reference kitschy American consumer culture. The colorful square pattern of murrine on this vase is iconic of Marquis’ decorative vocabulary, while other forms in his prolific career feature American pop culture references with dollar signs, stars, skulls and hearts formed in murrine.
