While Laura Donefer’s amulet baskets are admired as visually stunning works of art, the forms are also meant to safeguard their owners. Much like eye bead jewelry that has been made since ancient times to protect the wearer from negative energy, the richly layered glass beads that crown the vessel are apotropaic, or invested with protective powers. Referencing the long history of protective devices such as amulets and talismans across cultures, Donefer’s baskets are a contemporary version with richly layered textures and colors in glass.
