The Seattle-based artist Ginny Ruffner focused
her artistic practice on flameworking glass for over
four decades. Using a torch to shape borosilicate
glass, Ruffner sculpted the form, followed by
sandblasting to achieve a matte surface. Ruffner
then drew and painted details on the surface to
accentuate elements, such as the creases on
the palms of the hands and the snakeskin. The
seemingly unrelated forms in this sculpture were
symbols in the artist’s personal journey. Influential
in the early years of the American Studio Glass
Movement, Ruffner taught at the Pilchuck School
in Washington and encouraged up-and-coming
generations of artists to explore flameworking.
