Coming from a family of glassmakers, German-born Klaus Moje worked as a glasscutter journeyman before making sculpture and stained glass in Europe. He spent the latter part of his career in Australia, where he established the
glass program at Canberra School of Art at Australian National
University in 1982. There, Moje focused the workshop on kiln-forming
processes, revitalizing methods that originated in ancient times. As
a mentor, he encouraged generations of students to experiment. The
vibrant, painterly composition of intricate, diagonal patterns shows
his pioneering approach and technical mastery of kiln-fused glass.
Additionally, the form’s square panel with a shallow circular depression
was created by slumping the form over a mold as it was heated in a
kiln. While the work of his one-time student, Judi Elliott, who graduated
from the program in 1985, appears similar in form, she has forged her
own artistic style unique to her vision for kiln-fused glass.
