Pietro da Cortona was one of the most successful painters in 17th-century Rome. This work was executed by Cortona’s workshop soon after his death, following an original composition by the master. Here, Cortona enlivens this Old Testament wedding scene by placing the figure of Leah, Rachel’s sister, deliberately offcenter. Jacob’s striding pose, and the dynamic play of light across the drapery folds of all three figures, further energize the group.
