Darwin’s theories also pervaded popular culture and performance. At the Egyptian Hall in Piccadilly, audiences witnessed a human oddity billed as ‘The Missing Link’ between man and ape (in actuality a child covered in a fine layer of hair), an attraction that supposed to validate evolutionary theory and aided in reaffirming man’s status atop the evolutionary chain.
