Dale Chihuly is known for adapting Venetian glassmaking techniques, and the name for the Macchia series was derived from the Italian word meaning spot. Throughout Chihuly’s breadth of work, the process of making is privileged over symbolic associations, and color is more about method than meaning. In fact, the Macchia series began with the artist wanting to use all 300 colors available in the hot shop. Chihuly started by making a color chart with one color for the interior, another for the exterior, and a contrasting color for the lip wrap, along with various colors layered into bands and spots. With color as the driving force behind the series, each work has been an experiment in unexpected color combinations. Additionally, the illusion of motion is captured in the undulating forms that complement the vibrant colors.
