Photographer Edward J. Kelty made his living by commemorating gatherings in large scale photographic prints which he sold to participants. Among his favorite subjects were the numerous circuses touring the United States in the first quarter of the 20th century, particularly Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Taken in Madison Square Garden during the 1933 circus season, this photograph shows the circus cast momentarily paused during a performance of the year's spectacle, The Durbar of Delhi. In the lower right corner it is possible to see on the statue act performers, made up in the bronze body powder, sitting atop the elephant Modoc.
