Fern Street Circus combines an adult performing group with programs for teaching the circus arts. The Circus was founded in San Diego, California in 1990 by John Highkin and Cindy Zimmerman "to explore circus as an artistic and narrative form and to function as a means for artists to work in neighborhoods." The After-School Circus Skills Program began in 1993 to introduce the circus arts through recreation rather than an organized school. The free program for children ages six and up, incorporates acrobatics, clowning, juggling, trapeze, tight wire, and more. Each year the program produces the Fern Street Junior Circus, and select students participate in Fern Street's professional show, which tours Southern California.
