Cypriot sculptors and architects used the soft limestone of Cyprus, much of which was quarried near Golgoi. That site is in the Mesaoria, the region of Cyprus between its two mountain ranges. Sculptures like this one were originally colorfully painted. Paints came from copper, cinnabar, and other natural sources.
