Ippolito Leoni was the eldest son of the great Padovan portraitist, Ottavio Leoni. A member of the Accademia di San Luca, an association of artists in Rome, and later the honorific Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon (he became Regent of the society in 1664), Ippolito carried on his father's tradition as a portraitist. The Ringling sheet was originally attributed to Ottavio, as it does indeed approach his style in its sensitive facial treatment and naturalism. The loose execution of the drawing, however, particularly around the sitter's coiffure and elaborate collar, indicates it is instead the work of his son.
