Juxtapositions and overlaps of hue and saturation surprise and delight the eye in this fractured composition. By attaching woven fabric, wrinkled paper, and other textured materials onto the surface of his printing blocks, Shinagawa Takumi gave the work a richly tactile quality. On his approach, he explained that a successful print is not just a matter of applying color on top of paper, but that the printing ink “has to go into the paper, to become part of the paper. Often the pigments should be mixed in the paper: by applying one over another to get a living, glowing color deep in the paper.”
