In Jablonow I, Stella takes some of the premises of abstract painting farther by repeating the dynamic asymmetry of the forceful abstract lines in the very shape of the canvas. The result is a "shaped" canvas that is both a painting and a sculpture. Surprisingly, Stella found his inspiration for this painting in photographs of ruins of Polish synagogues destroyed in World War II.
