Magnasco was virtually forgotten after his death, since he had no real followers, and made almost no art for public locations. In the early 20th century, his work was rediscovered, as his fantastic, visionary style seemed more in line with modern artistic sensibilities. This and another work, clearly a pair, are small oil sketches for larger, more finished paintings. They exhibit the overall intensity of Magnasco’s best work, as well as his typical dark backgrounds enlivened by agitated strokes of color for figures and details.
