Robert Rauschenberg's Hoarfrost series consists of large un-stretched pieces of fabric with newsprint and photographs printed onto them. Paper and cardboard are incorporated into the composition, creating a collage effect, and the sheer, semi-transparent fabric with its upper edge pinned to the wall, is allowed to move freely. Rauschenberg used the same technique throughout the Hoarfrost series to produce over 150 individual works. The Ringling work represents a male figure, which appears to be an Archaic Greek kouros, placed between two cars. The striking contrast of the images creates a startling juxtaposition of the ancient and modern. Each seems to represent one moment in time without any kind of relationship between them.
