Soldiers and women smoke and play games of chance in this small interior scene. Paintings depicting gambling, card playing, drinking, smoking, and prostitution were made in great numbers in the seventeenth century in the Netherlands. Such images were of moral significance, for they were seen as warnings against temptation and the dangers of excess.
