Though this painting and its mate depict scenes from the Old Testament, they are primarily landscapes. The rather roughly painted surfaces, often with thick impasto, show the painter’s concern for creating a suggestive, atmospheric outdoor setting. In the 17th century it was not uncommon for Old Testament scenes to be included in landscape paintings representing the Seasons, Elements, or Months, and it is possible that these works may have been part of an allegorical set representing the Elements.
