Raeburn was a fascinating figure who first apprenticed as a goldsmith before moving on to portrait miniatures and eventually oil painting. He chose to base his practice in Scotland, rather than London, and became the official painter to George IV. James Joseph Hope Vere (1785 – 1843) was a Scottish nobleman, and this portrait likely dates from 1811, the year he inherited his valuable family estates, or 1813, the year of his marriage.
