This painting, along with another in the collection by Chiari, belongs to a category of image that was sought by patrons for private display in the home. Although the scenes make reference to classical mythology, the real subject here is the nude female form. Interestingly, although these works are close in size and subject matter, it is not clear that they were originally made as a pair. Chiari worked as an assistant to the much better-known Roman painter Carlo Maratta, and his vivid palette and figure style are both heavily influenced by his master.
