Edouard Vuillard, a follower of the Impressionists, specialized in intimate domestic scenes. The simple scene of a young girl having her breakfast becomes a pretext for Vuillard to display beguiling Art Nouveau-like lines and subtle coloristic effects. Vuillard turns the viewer into a voyeur by showing things at odd angles and by his "unfinished" technique, both of which force a more active participation in the act of looking. The pictorial interest of this work lies as much in the artist's ability to recreate the experience of seeing, as it does in revealing an intimate scene of domestic life.
