The theme of the Golden Age was taken from the opening pages of the Metamorphoses, by the ancient Roman poet Ovid. This text was the primary source for mythological subjects in European art from the late sixteenth century onward. The Golden Age was an idealized time for mankind during which “spring was everlasting…streams of sweet nectar flowed.” Mankind lived “without a law,” did right, and were happy.
