Called the "Toscanini of the Big Top," Merle Evans was born in Columbus, Kansas. In 1916, Charles Ringling hired Evans as bandmaster for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus; he would hold that position for fifty years - more than 18,000 performances with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Combined Shows.
