Scenes of the hunt are the most common representations in Jan Fyt's oeuvre. One of the most prosperous artists in Antwerp, Fyt was known for his elaborate compositions in which hunting dogs ravage stags and boar. Like many artists, Fyt executed paintings through preparatory studies and sketches. This drawing is a study for a painting in the Ringling Museum of Art, Atalanta and Meleager Hunt the Calydonian Boar (Gallery 12). Depicted here is the dog with fierce eyes and curled lips that is seen in the center of the composition. The contours of the animal are reinforced through a combination of hatching and stumping, which both endows the canine with a greater sense of volume and confirms the artist's command of the black chalk medium.
