The son of a German painter, Bernhard Keil was born in Denmark in 1624. He trained first in Copenhagen and then in Amsterdam, in the studio of Rembrandt. In 1651 he moved to Italy, settling in Rome in 1656. While his style was heavily influenced by Italian art, Keil’s preference for depicting scenes from everyday life, known as genre scenes, points back to his northern European roots. This work, depicting two peasant couples, may be intended as an allegory of Youth and Age.
