A self-taught artist, Lawrence became the foremost portrait painter in Britain and president of the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1811, he exhibited this portrait of Mrs. Stratton (née Anne D’Ewes; 1776-1861) at the Academy to wide acclaim. The relaxed setting and pose, and the genuine affection of the sitter’s Newfoundland dog, convey a rare charm and intimacy.
