Maes created elegant portraits of Dutch burghers in fashionable clothing reflecting their wealth and status. The artist portrayed the young, elegant Anna Hofstreek in a formal pose and with a neutral expression, but softened and enlivened her image with the loose brushwork and vibrant reds of her shimmering gown. Her pearls are emblems of virtue as well as proclaiming her prosperity. The clear water of the fountain in which she dips her fingers is a reference to her purity.
