John Ringling purchased this painting out of the 1926 Astor sale in New York City either to add to his small collection of 19th-century art or perhaps as a relic of the Astors to display with the rooms he bought at the same time. The painting is an example of the French academic style with its preference for highly detailed and precisely realistic surfaces. Ferdinand Roybet shows an imagined episode from 17th-century artistic life.
