The Swiss-born painter Angelica Kauffmann had an illustrious career in Italy and England, and was a founding member of the Royal Academy. Though prolific as a portraitist, she preferred serious subject paintings, like this one, and was one of few women artists to specialize in this category. With its classical subject, clear and balanced composition, and figure style inspired by ancient sculpture, this work perfectly encapsulates the Neoclassical aesthetic. The fine frame, which exhibits an equally restrained and elegant use of classical architectural motifs, is likely original.
