This painting, which has borne several attributions in the past, is now thought to be the work of Il Jacone, a Florentine painter who studied with Andrea del Sarto. Jacone’s work was heavily influenced by the Mannerist style prevalent in 16th-century Florence, evident here in the elongated figures—especially that of the Christ Child—placed in strange spatial relationships to one another.
