This fragment would have been part of a larger narrative relief along the outside of a Buddhist religious structure. In the upper panel to the left is a bearded figure who may be Atavika, a woodland deity, or Angulimala, a murderer reformed by the Buddha. To the right is Vajrapani, a youthful companion of Buddha, as indicated by the thunderbolt he holds. The lower panel depicts a woman making an offering to the Buddha. Scenes such as this incorporate the tales that developed surrounding the Buddha's accomplishments.
