In Untitled 1/2, Shapiro seems to disavow the usual premise of sculpture as a representational medium. Indeed, this sculpture seems to be a hopelessly inexpressive object - an iron rectangle strangely ennobled by being placed on a base. Yet, by the simple device of adding window-like openings to the iron box, Shapiro indicates that it might be seen as a representation of a house or temple. Thus, the viewer is confronted by a sense of some further mystery.
