Robert Rauschenberg's title refers to a series of works he called "gluts" produced in the 1980s. They are composed of pieces of found metal, in this case, siding from a mobile home. A "Dutch-roll" is defined as a "combination of directional and lateral oscillation of an airplane" - a term that could refer to the floating appearance of the metal parts. Thus, Rauschenberg aims to convey a lyrical effect of movement and delight in observing the artist's process.
