While many of the traditional European fairs happen at specific dates throughout the year, some have come about in celebration of important national moments. Following the Treaty of Paris, ending hostilities between Britain and France, week-long fairs were held across parks in London. Each venue had special attractions. The Hyde Park Fair was best remembered for a reenactment of a sea battle scaled to fit the Serpentine River of the park. Along with the sea battle, Hyde Park’s Fair offered visitors shops, live performances, and unique historical collections. This scene of the stalls and booths of the Hyde Park Fair was drawn by Lady Julia Gordon, a pupil of J.M.W. Turner.
