Near the end of the circus performance, several chariots would race at breakneck speed around the hippodrome track, a space of about thirty feet between the quarter poles of the big top, in imitation of the Circus Maximus of ancient Rome. This chariot would have been pulled by a two horse hitch; other chariots could have three or even a four horse hitch.
