Many of the various types of performances associated with the circus had traditions that predated the organization of shows in a ring. Pictorial evidence of juggling can be found throughout history, with images from ancient Egypt and other civilizations depicting a human figure with objects in motion. Requiring little in the way of equipment and setting, jugglers are often among the entertainments at festivals and in town squares and other public spaces.
This image was drawn by English painter and illustrator Luke Fildes for inclusion in the journal Once a Week, a publication in print form 1859 through 1880. The purpose of the journal was to showcase original illustrations by leading artists of the time. An artist recognized for his social realism style, Fildes believed that visual images had the power to sway public opinion. His contributions to the journal, like the rest of his work, highlighted common occurrences and everyday experience.
