The image of Anthony Madox was published in the British journal The New Universal Magazine, or Gentleman and Lady’s Polite Instructor Subject that is Proper to Display. The journal was published for several decades in the later 18th century with the intent of sharing diverse knowledge and promoting exposure to writing, the arts, and history. The growing print industry produced many such journals, and through their pages, a new notion of celebrity began to form. Including images like that of Madox, depicted performing a variety of feats of skill and balance, intrigued readers. Noting in the accompanying text that Madox had “performed before his Majesty” both justified the performer’s inclusion in the journal and increased broader public desire to experience his act.
