In this porcelain jardinière you can see the influences of European taste upon export ceramics. The shape is much different from the other jardinières in the Solarium, with a thin, extended lip, bulbous body, and a pronounced foot. Another European addition is the single ringed handles in the shape of lion heads, a European decorative element that has here been incorporated into the design. If you look from the side, you can see where the ring would have fit into the lion's mouth. Again, we have a piece that could be either Japanese or Chinese. If it is Japanese, then the rim is decorated with a katana (long sword), gunbai uchiwa (solid fan), wakizashi (daggar), and a hy?tan (bottle made of a gourd). If it is Chinese, then these symbols are Taoist in nature and these symbols belong to the Eight Immortals.
