People have been fascinated throughout history by objects and phenomena that excite wonder and astonishment. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the sideshow, with its displays of people and animals, was a popular part of the circus experience. Female snake charmers performed in exotic costumes. Not always of foreign background, many snake charmers were wives of other circus members. Nula Delavanti is featured in this poster with her "pets," a celebrity portrait, and vignettes showing her dominance over her snakes. The date sheet added to the poster promoted the date and performance.
