Roberta Mason’s artistic practice is grounded in
environmental responsibility with a carbon-friendly,
sustainable studio and hot shop located in west Wales in the
United Kingdom. To minimize her environmental impact, the
artist remelts waste glass from projects to create new work
that explores the intersection of art, science and the natural
world. Pink Porifera is from a series that focuses on marine
sponges. Mason captures the essence of the underwater
environment by incorporating hollow sliced canes, or murrini,
into the molten glass surface, creating bubbles within the
patterning. The artist aims to share the wonder, curiosity,
and interconnection with all life that she experiences as
a scuba diver, while also highlighting the crucial role that
porifera play in sustaining marine ecosystems.
