While Sonja Blomdahl was a teaching assistant at Pilchuck Glass
School in Washington during its early years, she first encountered
a visiting glassmaker from Murano, Italy, demonstrating the
sophisticated incalmo technique. The process to successfully
fuse molten glass bubbles together requires great control and
precision as the edges of the adjoining elements must have the
exact same diameter. During the burgeoning American Studio Glass
Movement, the exchange of centuries-old knowledge was energized
by experimentation. Blomdahl adapted this traditional technique
to create her signature style. The vibrant colors and balanced
proportions of Rose/Chartreuse are characteristic of her oeuvre. She
has focused primarily on spherical and double-gourded shapes. By
forging a path in the male-dominated glass hot shop, Blomdahl paved
the way for subsequent generations of women makers in the field.
