Museum of Art Gallery 3 Highlights

Gallery 3 presents a selection of Late Gothic and Renaissance works, mostly from Northern Europe. Paintings highlights include works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Cornelis van Cleve, Quinten Metsys, and Adriaen Ysenbrandt.

Much of the sculpture, furniture, and decorative arts on display in Gallery 3 was acquired in late 1927, when Mr. Ringling purchased a collection owned by Alva Vanderbilt Belmont (1853-1933) that had been famously displayed in the Gothic Room of her Marble House residence in Newport, Rhode Island. This collection was first amassed by the Parisian architect-decorator and art collector Émile Gavet (1830-1904) in the late 19th century. In making this purchase, Mr. Ringling enhanced the chronological and geographic reach of his collection, while also deepening its holdings, particularly in the areas of sculpture and decorative arts.
